Let the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be glorified. Today, let\u2019s reflect on an often-overlooked truth: Jesus chose His apostles not based on human merit, status, or moral perfection \u2014 but based on divine purpose and grace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f Jesus Prayed Before Choosing<\/strong><\/h4>\n
Before selecting His twelve apostles, Jesus spent an entire night in prayer:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNow it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Luke 6:12\u201313, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This reveals something deeply theological: divine calling precedes human qualification<\/strong>. Jesus didn\u2019t consult resumes \u2014 He consulted the Father.<\/p>\n
\n1. Simon the Zealot \u2014 The Revolutionary<\/strong><\/h3>\n
The name \u201cZealot\u201d refers to a radical Jewish nationalist group<\/strong> determined to overthrow Roman rule. They were known for violent rebellion and would be considered religious extremists by today\u2019s standards. Simon, one of them, would have been seen as a terrorist by the Romans.<\/p>\n
Yet Jesus called him.<\/p>\n
\nThis teaches us that no ideology is too extreme to be redeemed<\/strong> by Christ. Even a man of violence can be transformed into a man of peace.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\n2. Matthew the Tax Collector \u2014 The Collaborator<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Tax collectors were viewed as traitors<\/strong> and thieves<\/strong>, working for the oppressive Roman Empire and profiting from their own people. In Jewish society, they were outcasts.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, \u2018Follow Me.\u2019 So he arose and followed Him.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Matthew 9:9, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
What’s astonishing is that Jesus united Simon (the anti-Rome extremist)<\/strong> with Matthew (a Rome-employed tax collector)<\/strong> in the same ministry team. This shows the power of the gospel to reconcile enemies<\/strong> and break down societal barriers (see Ephesians 2:14\u201316).<\/p>\n
\n3. Judas Iscariot \u2014 The Greedy Opportunist<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Judas was not just a traitor; he was motivated by greed<\/strong> and possibly disillusioned with Jesus\u2019 peaceful, non-political mission. He stole from the ministry funds (John 12:6) and ultimately betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14\u201316).<\/p>\n
Jesus knew Judas\u2019s heart \u2014 and still gave him the opportunity to change.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHave I not chosen you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?\u201d<\/em> \u2014 John 6:70, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
God\u2019s grace allows even the most flawed people to walk closely with truth \u2014 but it does not override personal choice. Judas tragically squandered<\/strong> his calling.<\/p>\n
\n4. The Fishermen \u2014 The Uneducated and Ordinary<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen \u2014 a trade often looked down upon. They were uneducated by rabbinic standards (Acts 4:13), yet Jesus called them to be fishers of men.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThen He said to them, \u2018Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.\u2019\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Matthew 4:19, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Peter was passionate, sometimes violent (John 18:10), and yet he became a pillar of the early Church<\/strong> (Galatians 2:9).<\/p>\n
James and John once asked Jesus to destroy a Samaritan village with fire from heaven \u2014 echoing Elijah\u2019s Old Testament judgment (Luke 9:54). Jesus rebuked them:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou do not know what manner of spirit you are of.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Luke 9:55, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This rebuke reminds us that zeal without love is not the Spirit of Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
\n\u271d\ufe0f What Does This Teach Us?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Theologically, this tells us that:<\/p>\n

God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called<\/strong> (1 Corinthians 1:26\u201329).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Redemption is for everyone<\/strong> \u2014 the rebel, the traitor, the hypocrite, the thief, the outcast.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

The church is made up of people from every background<\/strong>, united not by past performance, but by grace (Romans 5:8).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Transformation is the evidence of true calling<\/strong> (2 Corinthians 5:17).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n\ud83d\udcac What About You?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Maybe you\u2019re corrupt, addicted, proud, broken, violent, or deeply ashamed of your past. Maybe you\u2019ve made choices that hurt others. Maybe society has rejected you. Jesus is still calling you.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n\u201cCome to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Matthew 11:28, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
You may be a politician, a businessperson, a street vendor, or even a fraudster. Regardless of your background, Jesus calls you the same way He called Peter, Matthew, and Simon the Zealot.<\/p>\n
What matters isn\u2019t where you begin \u2014 it\u2019s how you finish.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cFor many are called, but few are chosen.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Matthew 22:14, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
All of the apostles, except Judas, were transformed. They became bold, faithful, Spirit-filled witnesses, willing to die for the gospel. Judas alone rejected that transformation.<\/p>\n
\nDon\u2019t let that be your story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\n\ud83d\ude4f A Final Word<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Wherever you are today, start afresh with Jesus. He accepts you just as you are \u2014 but He loves you too much to leave you there. He wants to make you His chosen one<\/strong>, just as He did with His apostles.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
