How do you read it?\u2019 And he answered, \u2018You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 And he said to him, \u2018You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.\u2019 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, \u2018And who is my neighbor?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>NIV:<\/strong> \u201cOn one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. \u2018Teacher,\u2019 he asked, \u2018what must I do to inherit eternal life?\u2019 \u2018What is written in the Law?\u2019 he replied. \u2018How do you read it?\u2019 He answered: \u2018Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019 \u2018You have answered correctly,\u2019 Jesus replied. \u2018Do this and you will live.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>KJV:<\/strong> \u201cAnd, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus then told the parable of the <strong>Good Samaritan<\/strong> (Luke 10:30-37), illustrating the true meaning of \u201cneighbor.\u201d A man was attacked by robbers and left for dead. A priest and a Levite passed by without helping. A Samaritan, considered an outsider and despised by Jews, stopped, cared for him, and paid for his care. Jesus concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhich of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?\u201d He answered, \u201cThe one who showed mercy.\u201d And Jesus said to him, \u201cGo and do likewise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Theological Insights<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. <strong>Testing Jesus versus Genuine Faith<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The lawyer\u2019s question was not seeking truth but attempting to <strong>justify himself<\/strong> (Luke 10:25 ESV). This illustrates <strong>prideful religiosity<\/strong>, a common theme in Scripture. Intellectual knowledge alone is insufficient for salvation; God values <strong>faith in action<\/strong> (James 2:14-17 NIV, KJV).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. <strong>Knowledge of the Law vs. Heart Obedience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As a lawyer (Torah scholar), he knew the Law thoroughly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV):<\/strong> \u201cLove the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Leviticus 19:18 (ESV):<\/strong> \u201cYou shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This shows that <strong>correct knowledge of God\u2019s Word<\/strong> must be paired with <strong>practical obedience<\/strong>. Mere intellectualism without action is spiritually empty.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>3. <strong>Redefining \u201cNeighbor\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At that time, \u201cneighbor\u201d was often interpreted <strong>narrowly<\/strong>, meaning only fellow Jews. But Jesus\u2019 parable expands this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>A <strong>neighbor<\/strong> is anyone in need, even a foreigner, enemy, or outcast.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Samaritan, a non-Israelite, becomes the example of true love, prefiguring <strong>God\u2019s covenantal inclusion of Gentiles<\/strong> (Ephesians 2:11-22 NIV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>4. <strong>Mercy over Ritual<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The priest and Levite represented <strong>religious formality<\/strong> and ritual purity, yet ignored the man in need. Jesus emphasizes that <strong>mercy (<em>eleos<\/em>) surpasses ritual<\/strong> (Matthew 9:13 ESV; Hosea 6:6). True obedience to God integrates <strong>compassion with law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>5. <strong>God Uses the Unexpected<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The parable highlights that <strong>God\u2019s instruments of grace<\/strong> are not always those we expect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Outsiders and nonbelievers can demonstrate love and kindness, sometimes more faithfully than religious insiders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Acts 10:34-35 (ESV): \u201cGod shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>6. <strong>Contemporary Applications<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Beyond Denominationalism:<\/strong> Love must transcend race, religion, and tribalism.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Love in Action:<\/strong> Practical care\u2014financial support, hospitality, and visiting the sick\u2014is essential (1 John 3:17-18 NIV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Humility in Knowledge:<\/strong> Knowing Scripture is valuable, but obedience and mercy reflect God\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>7. <strong>Christological Significance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus, as the <strong>fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets<\/strong> (Matthew 5:17 KJV), demonstrates that love \u2014 not ritual compliance \u2014 is the true measure of righteousness.
