Matthew 20:6 (ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, \u2018Why do you stand here idle all day?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus told a parable in Matthew 20 that not only described the Kingdom of Heaven but also revealed a powerful truth about our role in God\u2019s mission. The parable describes a landowner who hires laborers for his vineyard at different times throughout the day \u2014 early morning, 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., and finally, 5 p.m. (the eleventh hour).<\/p>\n

Even with just one hour left in the workday, the master was still hiring.<\/p>\n

He found people standing idle and asked a piercing question:
\u201cWhy do you stand here idle all day?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Picture of God\u2019s Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In this parable, the landowner represents God<\/strong>, the vineyard represents His Kingdom<\/strong>, and the workers represent believers<\/strong> who are called to serve. The different hours of the day represent different moments in life or history when people are called into ministry.<\/p>\n

God is always calling laborers into His harvest field \u2014 no matter the time or circumstance.<\/p>\n

Jesus said in another place:<\/p>\n

\n

Matthew 9:37\u201338, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cThe harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The problem is not a lack of work \u2014 it\u2019s a lack of willing workers.<\/p>\n

\n

Are You an Eleventh-Hour Worker?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Some may think, \u201cIt\u2019s too late for me to serve God. I\u2019ve wasted too much time.\u201d
But the parable teaches that even those who join the work late in the day \u2014 the eleventh-hour<\/em> workers \u2014 are still welcome and still rewarded.<\/p>\n

God\u2019s grace isn\u2019t bound by time.
What matters is your obedience<\/strong> when you hear the call.<\/p>\n

\n

Romans 11:29, ESV<\/em><\/p>\n

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.\u201d<\/em> \u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Excuses That Keep Believers Idle<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here are some of the most common reasons people delay or avoid serving in God\u2019s vineyard \u2014 and what Scripture says in response.<\/p>\n

\n

1. Fear and Insecurity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Many feel they are not qualified:
\u201cI\u2019m too young,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not educated,\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know the Bible,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m shy,\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t speak well.\u201d<\/p>\n

But God doesn\u2019t call the equipped \u2014 He equips the called<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

1 Corinthians 1:27, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cBut God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Look at Moses \u2014 he said:<\/p>\n

\n

Exodus 4:10<\/p>\n

Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent… I am slow of speech and of tongue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But God answered:<\/p>\n

\n

Exodus 4:11\u201312, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cWho has made man\u2019s mouth?… Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If God can use Moses, He can use you.<\/p>\n

\n

2. Waiting for a Perfect Time or \u201cSpecial Calling\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some believers delay ministry, thinking they need a dramatic calling or special moment to serve. But the Great Commission<\/strong> has already been given to all believers:<\/p>\n

Matthew 28:19, ESV<\/p>\n

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

There is no need to wait for a voice from heaven.
The time is now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201c2 Corinthians 6:2, ESV<\/em>,<\/p>\n

Behold now is the favorable time;\u00a0 now is the day of salvation.\u201d \u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You were called the moment you were saved.
Don\u2019t wait for permission \u2014 you already have it in Christ.<\/p>\n

\n

3. The Cares and Burdens of Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Worries about money, jobs, relationships, or personal security often distract believers from God\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n

Jesus warned us about this:<\/p>\n

Matthew 13:22, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In Haggai\u2019s time, people neglected rebuilding God\u2019s temple to focus on their own homes and lives:<\/p>\n

\n

Haggai 1:4, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Don’t wait until you’re “settled” to serve God. That day may never come.<\/p>\n

\n

Matthew 6:33, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cBut seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

4. Spiritual Laziness<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s be honest \u2014 sometimes the issue is simply lack of motivation.
We want results without effort. We prefer comfort over sacrifice.<\/p>\n

But serving God costs something. Jesus said:<\/p>\n

\n

Luke 9:23, ESV<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Gospel does not advance on autopilot. It spreads through intentional prayer<\/strong>, sacrifice<\/strong>, and action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Time Is Short \u2014 Work While It Is Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We are living in the eleventh hour<\/strong> \u2014 near the end of the age. There\u2019s no time to waste.<\/p>\n

\n

John 9:4, NIV<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.\u201d

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The church doesn’t just need more listeners \u2014 it needs more laborers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You have something to contribute:
A testimony, a gift, a word of encouragement, a prayer.<\/p>\n

You may not preach from a pulpit \u2014 but you can witness to a neighbor.
You may not be a missionary overseas \u2014 but you can be one in your workplace, school, or community.<\/p>\n

The Reward Is the Same<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the parable, all the workers \u2014 whether hired in the morning or at the eleventh hour \u2014 received the same reward<\/strong> (Matthew 20:10).<\/p>\n

God doesn\u2019t reward based on how long<\/em> you\u2019ve worked, but how faithfully<\/strong> you respond when He calls.<\/p>\n

What Should You Do Now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. \n

    Start with what you know<\/strong> \u2014 Share your testimony, a Bible verse, or what you\u2019ve learned in church.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Pray<\/strong> for opportunities to serve and witness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Join your local church\u2019s ministry or outreach<\/strong> \u2014 even small roles matter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Don\u2019t wait<\/strong> for a perfect moment \u2014 the time is now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Corinthians 15:58, ESV<\/p>\n

    \u201cTherefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.\u201d

    \u00a0Don\u2019t Just Sit in Church \u2014 Be the Church<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Don\u2019t be content with being a churchgoer. Be a kingdom worker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s not too late.
    It\u2019s not too little.
    You are not too weak.
    God can and will<\/strong> use you \u2014 if you say yes.<\/p>\n
