THE MESSAGE BEHIND MOSES AND ELIJAH APPEARING TO JESUS<\/h3>\n

Blessed be the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Welcome as we reflect together on the eternal truths of God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n

There are important questions regarding the event when Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus on the mountain while He prayed with His three disciples\u2014Peter, John, and James:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    How could Jesus be visited by Moses, who had died many years earlier and had been buried by God Himself (cf. Deuteronomy 34:5-6, ESV<\/strong>)?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Why did Moses and Elijah appear to Him? What significance did their presence carry?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To answer these, let us look at the Scripture:<\/p>\n

    \n

    Luke 9:28-31 (ESV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201cNow about eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The key phrase is verse 31: \u201cwho appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Thus, the purpose of Moses and Elijah appearing to Jesus was to reveal God\u2019s plan for His approaching death, resurrection, and ascension\u2014the ultimate fulfillment of salvation.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Understanding Moses\u2019 Role<\/h3>\n

    Moses had died centuries earlier and was buried by God (Deuteronomy 34:5-6<\/strong>). Yet, God allowed him to appear in glory to testify prophetically about Jesus\u2019 death.<\/p>\n

    Before Christ\u2019s sacrifice, the spirits of the righteous were in the underworld, awaiting redemption (Luke 16:19-31, ESV<\/strong>; cf. 1 Peter 3:18-20, ESV<\/strong>). God could bring them temporarily to deliver a prophetic message. A biblical example is Samuel appearing through the medium of Endor (1 Samuel 28:7-19, ESV<\/strong>) to speak God\u2019s word about Saul\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n

    Similarly, Moses\u2019 appearance symbolized a prophetic witness to Jesus\u2019 death, even though he had already died. This demonstrates that God\u2019s plan transcends life and death: He orchestrates His purposes even through those who have passed on.<\/p>\n

    After Christ\u2019s resurrection, no one can summon the dead because Jesus took the keys of death and Hades (Revelation 1:18, ESV<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    Understanding Elijah\u2019s Role<\/h3>\n

    Elijah never died but was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11, ESV<\/strong>). He fully understood heavenly realities and was sent by God to testify prophetically about Jesus\u2019 ascension and authority in heaven.<\/p>\n

    Elijah\u2019s presence emphasizes that Christ\u2019s mission involved not only death (Moses) but also ascension (Elijah). His appearance provided confirmation of Jesus\u2019 future glorification in heaven.<\/p>\n

    Theological Significance<\/h3>\n

    Moses and Elijah functioned as heavenly witnesses<\/strong> to God\u2019s redemptive plan:<\/p>\n
