QUESTION:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What did the Lord mean in this verse?<\/p>\n

Amos 6:5 says:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and invent for yourselves instruments of music, like David.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Did God find fault with David and the way he praised Him?<\/p>\n

\n

ANSWER:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

No, absolutely not.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This verse does not<\/strong> mean that God is displeased with people who praise Him using musical instruments or many kinds of music. On the contrary, God strongly encourages such worship. In fact, this was one of the reasons why David was loved by God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, David himself wrote:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPraise Him with trumpet sound;
Praise Him with lute and harp!
Praise Him with tambourine and dance;
Praise Him with strings and pipe!
Praise Him with sounding cymbals;
Praise Him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Hallelujah!\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Psalm 150:3\u20136 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This clearly shows that God delights in praise offered with instruments, rhythm, and diverse musical expressions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

So why does God seem to rebuke people in Amos 6:5?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The key phrase is this:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou who sing idle (foolish, meaningless) songs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In other words, what they were singing did not glorify God<\/strong>. It appeared godly on the surface, but in reality it was worldly and empty<\/strong>. They were not worshiping God in spirit and in truth<\/strong> (John 4:24).<\/p>\n

Although they skillfully played instruments and claimed to worship God, their lives and actions were far from Him<\/strong>. They practiced sin and injustice, yet pretended to honor God with music.<\/p>\n

This was exactly the condition of Israel at that time. They committed many sins, yet wanted to appear spiritually impressive\u2014comparing themselves to David<\/strong> in worship. As a result, God rejected their hypocritical praise and pronounced judgment upon them, leading eventually to captivity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Lord says:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, declares the LORD, the God of hosts:
\u2018I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds,
and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.\u2019
And if ten men remain in one house, they shall die.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Amos 6:8\u20139 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Application to the Church Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This passage is a powerful picture of the Church of Christ today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We now have many modern instruments for worship\u2014guitars, powerful speakers, keyboards, modern harps, trumpets, and more. This is good and pleasing to God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But we must examine:<\/p>\n
