Question<\/h2>\n

Throughout much of the book of Song of Songs, the \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem\u201d are frequently mentioned. Who exactly are they? Are they simply women from the city of Jerusalem, as the text might seem to suggest?<\/p>\n

Answer<\/h2>\n

Let us turn to the Scriptures.<\/p>\n

\n

Song of Songs 1:5 (ESV-style)<\/strong>
\u201cI am very dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In another passage, these Daughters of Jerusalem are warned not to stir up love prematurely:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Song of Songs 2:7 (ESV)<\/strong>
\u201cI adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, who are these \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem\u201d?<\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem,\u201d<\/strong> also expressed as \u201cDaughter(s) of Zion,\u201d<\/strong> is a figurative expression. It represents the entire community of the people of Israel<\/em>, not just the literal women living in Jerusalem. In other words, it refers to the whole nation.<\/p>\n

Understanding This Through Scripture<\/h2>\n
\n

Zechariah 9:9 (ESV)<\/strong>
\u201cRejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This prophecy points to the Lord Jesus during His entry into Jerusalem. When the people saw Him, they welcomed Him by laying down palm branches on the road.<\/p>\n

John 12:12\u201315 (ESV)<\/strong>
\u201cThe next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out,
\u2018Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!\u2019
And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
\u2018Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey\u2019s colt!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Notice this carefully: those who shouted \u201cHosanna!\u201d were not just women from Jerusalem, but people of all ages and groups<\/strong>. This clearly shows that the \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem\u201d represent the wider community of Israel.<\/p>\n

This understanding is further supported by other passages such as Micah 4:8; 2 Kings 19:20\u201321; Isaiah 37:22; and Isaiah 62:1.<\/em><\/p>\n

Application to Believers Today<\/h2>\n

As Christians\u2014both men and women\u2014we are considered part of spiritual Israel<\/em>. Therefore, all of us, regardless of gender, age, or status, if we have received Jesus, are included in what Scripture symbolically calls the \u201cDaughters of Zion\u201d or \u201cDaughters of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bible also warns us, as God\u2019s people, to turn away from sin\u2014especially both spiritual and physical immorality.<\/p>\n

Spiritual immorality refers to all forms of idol worship.<\/p>\n
