Question: Do the holy angels in heaven have leadership structures, just as we human beings have leaders who guide us? Answer:Just as we human beings have leadership structures here on earth, the Bible also reveals that angels have leadership in heaven. This means that among the angels, some hold leadership roles while others do not. For example, when we read the book of Revelation 12, we see that Michael is mentioned along with his angels, which clearly shows that Michael holds a position of leadership over other angels. Revelation 12:7-8 (KJV): “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.” We also read in Jude 1:9 where Michael is referred to as the Archangel, meaning “Chief Angel” or “Principal Angel”. Jude 1:9 (KJV): “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.” Additionally, when Joshua met the Angel of the Lord after crossing the Jordan, that Angel identified Himself as the Commander of the Army of the Lord. Now, the term “Commander” (Amiri) means a military leader — again indicating the existence of ranks among angels. Joshua 5:13-15 (KJV): “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.” This shows us that the angel was not just a mere messenger, but a leader over other angelic warriors in heaven — hence the title “Commander.” However… Although there is leadership among angels, this does not mean they should be worshiped, praised, or exalted. The only One who deserves praise and worship in heaven and on earth is GOD alone. Colossians 2:18 (KJV): “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.” Let us therefore put our faith, worship, and service in Jesus Christ alone, who is Lord over angels and all creation.
