Whenever God desires to save a person, His grace is always multiplied exceedingly—so much that from an outside perspective, it might look like He is forcing or using great power. This was exactly the case with Lot, his wife, and their children. When the two angels saw the delay, they took hold of their hands and forcibly pulled them out of the city because of God’s mercy. Genesis 19:15-16“When dawn broke, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.’ When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.” But this act of holding hands didn’t continue forever. Once they were outside the city, they knew what to do next. They were told not to look back. Yet Lot’s wife ruined herself. Genesis 19:17 “As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, ‘Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!’” Dear brothers and sisters, this picture shows us that salvation is an act of immense grace, such that no one can save themselves by their own strength. That is why God saw that the angels alone were not enough to save us from the great judgment to come; He sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to pull us away from the judgment of the last days and the lake of fire. He is the One who holds our hand and leads us out of the city of death to a safe place. But once He has placed us in a safe place, away from the world, it is every person’s responsibility to value that salvation by fleeing even further from sin, just as Lot and his children did. If we have already seen God’s hand pull us from sin, we should not be lazy or wait for grace to deliver us from the sins we carelessly continue to commit. When we reach this stage, it is time to heal ourselves. Now, consider Lot’s wife, who represents those saved whose hearts are still attached to the world. When she looked back, she became a pillar of salt. You may wonder, why a pillar of salt, and not something else like a pillar of wood, metal, or clay? Salt is a unique preservative that lasts forever. If salt is preserved well today, someone could use it millions of years later, and it would still retain its quality. This is why God elsewhere compared the covenant made with David and the children of Israel as a “covenant of salt,” meaning it is an everlasting covenant. Read: 2 Chronicles 13:5“Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship over Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?” Also see: Numbers 18:19 (This passage affirms the covenant of salt as an eternal agreement.) Thus, Lot’s wife became a living symbol of a rejected eternal covenant. Likewise, today, if Jesus Christ has saved us, but we toy with our salvation—going forward one day and back the next—we fail to appreciate the free forgiveness we received when we repented, and the great grace God has done for us. We do not see salvation as a great blessing that few in this world receive. Instead, one foot is in Christ and the other in Satan’s camp. Know that we are in danger of becoming “pillars of salt” spiritually. That is, God has entered an eternal covenant with us that we were unworthy to be saved. The consequence is that our salvation journey ends right where it began—we are spiritually dead, though outwardly alive. Remember, this covenant is eternal, meaning God will no longer receive you because His power to pull you no longer exists. You will continue in spiritual coldness until you die and end up in the lake of fire. There are many examples of this today: some start well with the Lord, some are even visited by angels, hear His voice, see visions, receive answers to prayers early in salvation, and are protected miraculously from many dangers. They know the journey has begun. But because of repeatedly returning to previous sins for a long time, they become like pillars of salt. These people are those you cannot believe ever truly knew Christ. Salvation is not something to experiment with. That is why the Bible says: Philippians 2:12-13“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” If you, dear reader, feel a small flicker inside you that is about to go out, do not let it die completely. It is good to repent sincerely now before God and wholeheartedly turn away from all the evil you have done, and follow Christ. This grace is still upon you, and that inner conviction you feel as you read this is the Holy Spirit drawing you back. Begin to turn and move forward. If you ignore this voice, there will come a time when you will no longer hear it. You will mock these words when you encounter them, but for now, that fear you feel is precious and necessary. It draws you to repentance. So repent today: stop going to clubs, stop drunkenness, return to your spouse, stop stealing, stop bribery, stop all sins you commit in your life—and do not look back like Lot’s wife. These are the last days. Every day you live, and as this world grows darker and life seems to stand still, what remains for you but to surrender your life to the Lord Jesus to save you? He will receive you because He loves you and has mercy on you. Your religion, whether Islam, Christianity, or any denomination, cannot save you. Only Jesus Christ can take you to a safe place. If you are ready today to start again with the Lord, your decision is very wise—one you will never regret. Find a quiet place where you can be alone, then kneel and pray this prayer in faith, knowing God is near, listening to you: Prayer of Repentance:“O God the Father, I come before You, acknowledging that I am a sinner and have committed many sins and deserve judgment. But You, my God, said in Your Word that You are a God of mercy who forgives thousands of people who love You. Today I come before You, seeking Your forgiveness and help, repenting all my sins sincerely and with all my heart. I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and He is the Savior of this world. Therefore, I ask that the blood of Your Holy Son cleanse all my evil. Now make me a new creature starting today and forever. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for receiving and forgiving me. Amen.” If you have prayed this prayer with faith, the next step is to confirm your repentance by action. Stop doing the things displeasing to God and separate yourself from them. Once God sees your genuine repentance, He will receive it and come to dwell in you forever. You also need to find a spiritual church to fellowship with other Christians, worship God, and learn the Bible to grow in salvation. Furthermore, you should be baptized properly by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins. Take these steps, and the Lord will be with you always. Many blessings to you.
