THE SORCERY OF BALAAM:
Numbers 23:23 (ESV) “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor any divination against Israel.” – Numbers 23:23 (ESV)
Numbers 23:23 (ESV)
“Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor any divination against Israel.” – Numbers 23:23 (ESV)
This verse is often invoked when believers sense spiritual attack, yet its full power is revealed when we understand the story behind it. Speaking Scripture in faith brings life and protection, because the Word is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16). However, without grasping the context, we risk limiting our understanding of God’s ways.
The Book of Numbers recounts Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Along the way, they faced many obstacles. One of these was the land of Moab. The Moabite king feared Israel and sought to prevent them from passing, even planning to fight them (Numbers 22:3–6).
To achieve his goal, he sought the help of Balaam, a well-known prophet and sorcerer (Numbers 24:1). Balaam was unique: though he practiced divination and sorcery, he could also hear God’s voice (Numbers 22:9). God used Balaam as a tool to reveal spiritual truths, even when Balaam’s heart was divided.
When Balaam assessed Israel, he realized:
They were God’s chosen people.
God’s protection surrounded them on all sides.
No sorcery, charm, or curse could succeed against them.
Balaam declared to the Moabite king:
“Numbers 23:23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor any divination against Israel.” –
“Numbers 23:23
Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor any divination against Israel.” –
This is the theological foundation of divine protection. God’s covenant people are shielded by His power. The Apostle Paul affirms this spiritual security in
Ephesians 6:12–13 (NIV): “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world… Therefore put on the full armor of God.”
Ephesians 6:12–13 (NIV):
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world… Therefore put on the full armor of God.”
Unable to curse Israel directly, Balaam advised the Moabite king to lead Israel into sin through sexual immorality and idolatry.
Numbers 25:1–3 (NIV) records the tragic outcome: “Israel stayed in Shittim, and the people began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women… Israel yoked themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.”
Numbers 25:1–3 (NIV) records the tragic outcome:
“Israel stayed in Shittim, and the people began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women… Israel yoked themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.”
Here we see a key spiritual principle: Satan cannot directly overthrow the blessed, but he can tempt them to disobedience. Balaam’s strategy relied on deception rather than magic, illustrating the biblical truth that sin separates us from God and invites judgment (James 1:14–15).
The story of Balaam is profoundly relevant for the modern believer:
God’s Protection is Real: No spell, charm, or witchcraft can succeed against those covered by God’s covenant (Psalm 91:11–12).
Spiritual Deception is the Primary Threat: Today, Satan uses subtlety, false teachings, and moral compromise to lure believers away from God (2 Corinthians 11:14–15).
Wisdom and Discernment are Essential: Believers must test everything by God’s Word (1 John 4:1), resisting false doctrine and ungodly influences.
Holiness and Obedience Protect Us: Separation from sin and wholehearted devotion to God sustains His blessings (Hebrews 12:14).
The Bible explicitly warns against the path of Balaam:
Jude 1:11 (NIV): “Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.”
Revelation 2:14 (ESV): “But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.”
Satan’s strategy is the same today: he seeks to distract and deceive believers, using people or circumstances that appear righteous but lead into sin.
Declare God’s Word in Faith: Trust in God’s promises as a shield against attack.
Study Scripture Deeply: Understand context, meaning, and application.
Resist Deception: Avoid moral compromise, idolatry, and ungodly influences.
Live in Holiness: Regular confession, repentance, and obedience guard against spiritual harm.
Rely on God’s Armor: Prayer, Scripture, faith, righteousness, and the Spirit are your protection
Balaam’s story teaches that spiritual attacks are real but limited. God’s protection cannot be overcome by sorcery, curses, or deception. The greatest danger is subtle deception that separates us from God. By staying obedient, holy, and discerning, we remain secure in His covenant and inherit the blessings He has intended for us.
The Lord bless you and keep you in His protection.
