Isaiah 30:21 (ESV):“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”
As children of God, we all face moments in life where we must make choices—some wise, others not. At times, we take the “right turn” in life; at others, we stray to the “left.” But no matter which direction we choose, God desires to speak to us. He wants to guide our steps, not just in crisis, but also in seasons of success.
Isaiah 30:21 reminds us that God’s voice is ever-present, even behind us, gently guiding us—“This is the way, walk in it.” What a beautiful picture of divine direction: not always dramatic, not always from the front, but a consistent, loving whisper that keeps us on course.
Many believers turn to God only in their “left-hand seasons”—moments of hardship, failure, loss, regret, or sickness. We cry out, “Lord, show me the way!” when we’ve hit a wall or fallen into despair.
But how often do we cry out to Him during our “right-hand seasons”—times of growth, abundance, promotion, health, and peace? We easily assume that success equals correctness. But Scripture warns us that earthly success does not always mean spiritual alignment.
Proverbs 16:25 (ESV):“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
Just because a path feels good, or leads to material success, doesn’t mean it’s God’s path for you. In fact, some of the most spiritually dangerous moments come when life is going well. Our self-reliance grows. Our urgency to pray weakens. We assume we no longer need divine direction.
But even in seasons of blessing, we must be just as desperate for God’s voice.
Jesus illustrates this in Luke 12:16–21 (ESV):
“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
The rich man wasn’t condemned for being successful. He was condemned because he didn’t seek God’s voice in his success. He was self-sufficient, self-directed, and spiritually blind—trusting in wealth, not the Word.
It’s important to understand: a good decision is not always a godly decision.
Many people are moral, intelligent, hardworking, and successful. They’ve built solid careers, strong marriages, and even good reputations. But without God’s guidance, even the best human decisions can lead to eternal loss.
The Apostle Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV):“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.”
This is why Isaiah’s message is so powerful: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice behind you…”—not just during detours, but always. That “voice behind you” is the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), whispering God’s will into your heart, if you will listen.
Every day, humble yourself before God. Begin your day in prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to lead you.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV):“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
This doesn’t mean life will be perfect, but it guarantees that your steps will be ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23). His presence will go before you, and His peace will guard your heart (Philippians 4:7).
It doesn’t matter if you’re a pastor, a prophet, a CEO, a student, or a parent—we all need divine direction. The devil is always looking for opportunities to lead us astray (1 Peter 5:8), especially when we’re most confident in ourselves.
God speaks in many ways:
Through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14)
Through the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16)
Through peace in your heart (Colossians 3:15)
Through wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14)
And even through circumstances or correction (Hebrews 12:6)
We must remain spiritually sensitive—ready to hear the whisper that says, “This is the way, walk in it.”
This promise is for you—right now. Don’t wait for crisis to seek God. Don’t let success silence your prayers. Let every step—right or left—be guided by the voice of the Lord.
