LET YOUR GOODNESS BE SPOKEN OF WITH HONOR

LET YOUR GOODNESS BE SPOKEN OF WITH HONOR

The Word of God teaches us to overcome “evil with good.”

Romans 12:20-21

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

This means that when someone does you wrong, don’t repay them with evil. Instead, repay them with goodness, so that the one who wronged you will see their own fault and may come to repentance.

However, the same Bible also teaches us that our goodness should not be spoken of as evil.

Romans 14:16

“Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.”

This shows us that even “goodness” can be twisted and spoken of as “evil.”

You may indeed avoid repaying evil for evil, and choose to respond with good—but still, the good you did may be misjudged or misrepresented as “evil.”

Therefore, we must also purify our goodness. Just like water, although it’s used to clean clothes, it can itself become dirty. Even soap, although used for cleansing, can also be contaminated.

Likewise, goodness, though desirable and essential, can also be corrupted and appear evil.

What then corrupts our goodness?

1. Wrong Intention

Motive is one major thing that can turn our goodness into hypocrisy.
For example, a person may perform a “good deed,” but the real intention is to receive praise from people or to be seen as religious or spiritually upright. Yet inwardly, there is no love or sincere conscience. This kind of “goodness” is what ends up being spoken of as evil.

Matthew 23:28

“In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

God weighs the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). What we do is important—but why we do it matters even more in the Kingdom of God.

2. A Spirit of Revenge

This is the condition where someone returns good for evil—but in their heart, they are secretly desiring revenge, thinking “Let God strike them!”

Beloved, if you have been wronged, avoid such statements as: “I leave them to God, He will punish them.” Though this sounds wise, it is incomplete—it lacks the grace of God.

Yes, you may have responded with a good deed after being wronged. But instead of desiring God’s judgment on them, pray for mercy—that God may forgive them. This elevates your spiritual standing before God because God’s primary attribute is mercy, even before justice.

Proverbs 24:17–18

“Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.”

If God chooses to repay the person for what they did to you, that is entirely up to Him—for vengeance belongs to the Lord.

Romans 12:19

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

We cannot advise or dictate to God how to execute justice. Many have tried and failed. There were even those who prayed for God to punish Saul for persecuting Christians—but the “revenge” they sought turned into salvation, and Saul became the Apostle Paul.

So matters of vengeance do not belong to us as Christians. That is God’s responsibility. What we are called to do is to do good and pray for mercy for our enemies, that God may forgive them. Leave the rest to Him.

This might feel like a heavy test, but it is the Word of God! It’s not weakness or foolishness—it is the powerful and living Word of God.

Luke 6:27–30

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.
If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.”

May the Lord help us… so that our GOODNESS will be SPOKEN OF WITH HONOR and not as evil.

Maranatha! (Come, O Lord!)
