In Daniel 2:2 (ESV), it says:
Then the king gave orders to summon the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.
This passage shows that sorcerers were recognized as a distinct group involved in occult practices in ancient times. Sorcerers are practitioners of witchcraft who focus on manipulating the unseen spiritual realm through deception and trickery. Their “magic” is often aimed at creating illusions that deceive the senses, making people believe a supernatural event has occurred.
For example, during Moses’ time, Pharaoh’s magicians and sorcerers attempted to mimic the signs God performed through Moses. They turned staffs into snakes and brought forth frogs as signs, as recorded in Exodus 8:7 (ESV):
The magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
However, this was mere imitation and trickery, not the power of God working through them.
Another notable figure is Simon the sorcerer, mentioned in Acts 8:9-11 (ESV):
But there was a man named Simon, who previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, ‘This man is the power of God that is called Great.’ And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic.
Simon’s case highlights how sorcerers can captivate and deceive entire communities, gaining influence through occult practices.
Theological Perspective:
Scripture clearly teaches that the wisdom and power displayed by sorcerers and magicians are counterfeit and limited. Isaiah 47:12-13 (ESV) says:
Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may succeed, perhaps you may cause terror. You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you.
This passage reveals the futility of sorcery and astrology in the face of God’s sovereign power. None of these powers can save or bring true deliverance.
Only God has true authority to perform miracles. Sorcerers and magicians use knowledge that is often secret, occult, or demonic in origin (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, ESV):
There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD.
The Bible condemns sorcery because it relies on evil spirits and opposes the truth and power of God.
What Are Sorcerers Really Doing?
They do not perform real miracles. Rather, they deceive the mind and senses through occult knowledge and trickery. If you don’t understand the source of their “power,” it might appear miraculous, but it is ultimately an illusion.
It is similar to modern technology: seeing a person’s face on a video call might seem miraculous if you don’t understand the technology, but it is simply human knowledge applied.
Sorcerers cannot create life or true miracles. For instance, the frogs during the plagues in Egypt were not newly created creatures by sorcerers but natural frogs manipulated to appear suddenly by God’s power. If Satan or sorcerers could create, they would have created many beings to worship them, but they cannot (John 10:10, ESV):
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
The Bible shows that Satan’s power is limited and always subject to God’s sovereign will.
When Moses’ miracles were performed by God’s power, the Egyptian sorcerers tried to imitate them and ultimately failed (Exodus 8:18-19, ESV):
The magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts but failed. There were gnats on man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the finger of God.’ But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
They recognized God’s supremacy, though they remained obstinate.
What This Means for Believers Today
If you have Jesus Christ, you possess authority and power far beyond that of any sorcerer or demonic force. Through Jesus’ name, believers can perform true miracles, healings, and spiritual breakthroughs (Mark 16:17-18, ESV):
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.
Satan cannot perform genuine miracles. He can only counterfeit and deceive.
Therefore, trust only in Jesus. Seeking help from sorcerers or occult practices is foolish and a rejection of God’s grace (James 4:7, ESV):
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Turning to witchcraft is not only a denial of God’s provision but also dishonors Jehovah, the Creator of heaven and earth who sustains all things.
Repent, receive Jesus, and embrace eternal life. When sorcerers met Jesus, they obeyed Him and destroyed their scrolls of magic (Acts 19:18-19, ESV). What will you do?
May the Lord richly bless you.
