What Is Righteousness According to the Bible?

Righteousness is a concept that goes beyond just doing what is morally right. In everyday terms, it includes qualities like integrity, honesty, self-discipline, and doing what is expected by society. But in the Bible, righteousness refers to living in right relationship with God, based on His standards—not just human ones.

Righteousness involves obedience to God’s law, a heart aligned with His will, and a lifestyle that reflects His holiness. It’s not just about actions, but also about the condition of the heart (Proverbs 4:23).

What Does the Bible Say About Righteousness?

In the Bible, righteousness is portrayed as a way of life that flows from faith in God. It’s not earned by good deeds but credited by faith—just as it was for Abraham:

“Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” — Genesis 15:6

The Apostle Paul refers to this same principle when he explains that true righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not from following the law alone:

“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” — Romans 3:22

Examples of Righteous People in the Bible

Scripture gives us examples of individuals who lived righteously—not perfectly, but faithfully:

• Joseph resisted temptation and lived with integrity in Egypt (Genesis 39).
• Job was described as “blameless and upright,” a man who feared God and shunned evil (Job 1:1).
• Daniel remained faithful to God even in Babylon, refusing to defile himself with the king’s food (Daniel 1:8).

These people walked with God in obedience, even in the face of trials and temptations.

Righteousness and Blessing

Righteousness is often connected with blessing in Scripture. It brings stability, favor, and light even in dark times:

“The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him!” — Psalm 64:10

“Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.” — Psalm 112:4

These verses teach that righteousness not only pleases God but also leads to flourishing—spiritually and often practically.

Righteousness in Leadership and Teaching

Jesus warned religious leaders not to focus only on external acts like tithing while neglecting deeper matters like justice and love. He said:

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.” — Luke 11:42

This means that righteousness includes both personal holiness and social justice. A righteous person cares about truth, mercy, and fairness—both in their walk with God and in how they treat others.

Righteousness Is Not Possible Without Christ

No one can truly be righteous by their own efforts. The Bible says:

“There is no one righteous, not even one.” — Romans 3:10 
“All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” — Isaiah 64:6 

But the good news is that Jesus offers His righteousness to us. Through faith in Him, we are made right with God:

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

That means the starting point for a righteous life is not moral effort, but a relationship with Jesus. When we accept Him as Lord and Savior, He forgives our sins and gives us the Holy Spirit to empower us to live righteously.

Are You Living Righteously?

You can’t live a righteous life if you’re separated from Christ. It begins with receiving Him:

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12

Once you believe and receive Christ, God begins to transform your heart. You’ll find new strength to obey Him, new desires to live for Him, and a new identity as His child.

Righteousness is not about being perfect—it’s about being aligned with God. It’s shown through holiness, integrity, love, and obedience. And it starts with faith in Jesus.
