Let Your Hair Teach You the Voice of God

Let Your Hair Teach You the Voice of God

Why did God create you the way you are? Why didn’t He put horns on your head, or give you comb-like fleshy plates like a chicken, or two antennae like a snail or an insect? Instead, He placed hair on your head.

The voice of God is revealed in the very fabric of our creation. We are not fashioned arbitrarily or simply because this is the most perfect appearance for a human being. While God could have made us differently—even more beautifully—He chose to create us as we are for a distinct and divine purpose. This purpose goes beyond outward beauty and points to a deeper spiritual meaning (Psalm 139:13-14, ESV: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb… I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”).

Understanding the design of our bodies helps us comprehend the functioning of the Body of Christ—the church. The Apostle Paul teaches that we are all different parts of one body, each with a unique role, but all interconnected (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). When one part suffers, the whole body suffers (v. 26). This unity in diversity reflects God’s wisdom in creation and His plan for the church.

We are created not for mere appearance, but for function and purpose. Imagine being asked whether a stove or a flower is more essential in a home. Though the flower may be beautiful, the stove serves a vital practical purpose. Similarly, every part of your body, including your hair, serves a meaningful role intended by God.

When you look at your hair, the Lord wants you to grasp this truth:

God Counts Every Detail of Your Life.

Matthew 10:30-31 (NIV)

And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

This passage reveals God’s intimate knowledge and care over His creation. Nothing escapes His notice. The number of hairs on your head—an immense quantity—is known and recorded by God. This illustrates His sovereign providence over every detail of your life. You are valuable and deeply cared for by your Creator.

You Cannot Avoid Enemies—Spiritual Warfare Is Real.

Psalm 69:4 (NIV) says, “Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause.”

Just as your hair is numerous, so are the enemies that seek to harm you. These enemies are not only human adversaries but include spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). The Bible warns us that the devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Yet, Jesus was without sin and still faced opposition, so we should expect spiritual battles. Our victory lies in prayer, faith, and walking in God’s ways.

Know Your Limits and Speak with Integrity.

Matthew 5:37 (NIV)

All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

We are reminded not to overpromise or make rash oaths as if we control every outcome. God calls us to honesty and humility, recognizing our human limitations. The hairs on your head—each created by God—remind you to set boundaries and trust Him rather than your own strength.

Your Hair Symbolizes Spiritual Strength.

In Scripture, hair often symbolizes a person’s spiritual power and covenant with God. Samson’s story is a clear example. He was empowered by God through a Nazirite vow that included not cutting his hair (Judges 13:5, 16:17). When his hair was cut, he lost his God-given strength, demonstrating the spiritual consequences of breaking covenant.

Judges 16:22 (NIV) — “But his hair began to grow again after it had been shaved.”

Although Samson’s hair grew back, the damage done showed that restoring spiritual strength after compromise is costly.

Guard your spiritual vitality carefully. Do not allow anything—sin, temptation, or evil influence—to sever your connection with God, just as cutting hair severed Samson’s strength.

Have Times of Mourning and Repentance.

Jeremiah 7:29 (NIV) commands, “Cut off your hair, O Jerusalem; make yourselves bald and take up mourning; for you have suffered the LORD’s wrath.”

In biblical times, shaving the head symbolized deep sorrow and repentance (1 Samuel 1:11). Mourning was an external sign of inner brokenness over sin and separation from God. In the New Testament, true mourning leads to repentance and transformation (Matthew 5:4). Today, while cutting hair is often a routine act, God desires that it also remind us to continually humble ourselves, seek His face, and engage in heartfelt prayer and fasting.

Reflection:

Are you learning this lesson in your own body? Your hair, though often overlooked, points to profound spiritual truths: God’s intimate care, the reality of spiritual warfare, the need for honest living, the significance of covenant faithfulness, and the importance of repentance. May this understanding deepen your walk with God.

May the Lord bless you abundantly!
